Leather Apparel Market Size in Republic of Korea

The South Korean leather apparel market fell to $X in 2020, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 with an increase of X% against the previous year. In 2020, shipments abroad of apparel of leather or of composition leather decreased by -X% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, leather apparel exports fell slightly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X units), the U.S. (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) were the main destinations of leather apparel exports from South Korea, together accounting for X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for leather apparel exported from South Korea were the U.S. ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. In 2020, the average leather apparel export price amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a modest increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, leather apparel export price increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 an increase of X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, leather apparel imports fell to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2020, China (X units) constituted the largest leather apparel supplier to South Korea, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, leather apparel imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), more than tenfold. Italy (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+X% per year) and Italy (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest leather apparel suppliers to South Korea were Italy ($X), China ($X) and India ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Turkey and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X the main suppliers, Indonesia saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average leather apparel import price stood at $X per unit in 2020, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated measured growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 an increase of X% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
