Watermelon Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican watermelon market reduced slightly to $X in 2021, which is down by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine-year period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 50%. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of watermelons in Puerto Rico shrank to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately reflecting 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Spain (X tons), distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Italy (X tons), the United States (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the largest exporters of watermelons, together constituting 63% of total exports. The following exporters - Guatemala (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to watermelon exports from Spain stood at +6.6%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+80.7%), Morocco (+40.9%), Myanmar (+21.4%), Turkey (+15.5%), Brazil (+15.0%), Iran (+13.1%), Guatemala (+9.6%), the Netherlands (+5.5%), Italy (+5.0%), Greece (+4.0%) and the United States (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +80.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mexico (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+5.8 p.p.), Iran (+4.3 p.p.), Spain (+3.3 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.9 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.3 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States and Mexico saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -13.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest watermelon supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 27% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by the United States, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain stood at +7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+45.3% per year) and the United States (+2.2% per year).

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Canada (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main importers of watermelons, together committing 58% of total imports. The UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Spain, the Czech Republic, China and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +23.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
