Office Supply Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Puerto Rican office supply market, when its value increased by 5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, office supply production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

China dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), committing a 5.4% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Poland (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), the United States (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to office supply exports from China stood at -2.6%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+8.0%), Vietnam (+4.5%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. Poland and Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-3.6%), Mexico (-5.4%), the United States (-6.9%), the Czech Republic (-7.4%) and Belgium (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam and the Netherlands increased by +2.6 and +2.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest office supply supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 54% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 5.6% share of global exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-2.7% per year) and Vietnam (+5.0% per year).

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Japan (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the largest importers of office or school supplies of plastics, together mixing up 46% of total imports. The UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Canada (X tons), Poland (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+6.2%) and France (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2021. Italy, Japan and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.0%), the UK (-2.6%), Canada (-2.7%), Belgium (-4.2%), Spain (-4.3%), Austria (-7.5%) and Australia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+6.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest office supply importing markets into Puerto Rico were the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 35% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, France, the UK, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Poland, Australia and Austria, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +8.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
