For the third consecutive year, the Polish snail market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a buoyant increase. For the third consecutive year, Poland recorded decline in shipments abroad of snails (except sea snails), which decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. In general, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, snail exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tonnes), Spain (X tonnes) and the Czech Republic (X tonnes) were the main destinations of snail exports from Poland, together accounting for X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for snail exports from Poland, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Spain ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+X% per year) and the Czech Republic (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average snail export price amounted to $X per tonne, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a measured increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, snail export price increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was France ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2020, purchases abroad of snails (except sea snails) decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2013, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, snail imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2019 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, Ukraine (X tonnes) was the main snail supplier to Poland, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, snail imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tonnes), more than tenfold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine totaled +X%.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of snail to Poland, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($X), with a X% share of total imports.

The average snail import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while the price for Ukraine totaled $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy.
