Chick Peas Market Size in Nigeria

In 2019, the Nigerien chick peas market increased by X% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. From 2015 to 2019, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2019. Overall, exports showed a temperate expansion. Exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2019, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X kg), South Africa (X kg) and Norway (X kg) were the main destinations of chick peas exports from Nigeria, with a combined X% share of total exports. The Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further X 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Norway ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chick peas exports from Nigeria, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Sweden ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of value to Norway totaled -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (X% per year) and South Africa (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average chick peas export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nigeria

In 2019, supplies from abroad of chick peas increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2015 to 2019, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports surged to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2019, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2019, Lebanon (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of chick peas to Nigeria, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, chick peas imports from Lebanon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the UK (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Lebanon totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+X% per year) and the UK (-X% per year).

In value terms, Lebanon ($X), Spain ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest chick peas suppliers to Nigeria, together accounting for X% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Spain (+X% per year) saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2019, the average chick peas import price amounted to $X per tonne, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2007 to 2019: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, chick peas import price increased by +X% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. The import price peaked in 2019 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
