Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +53.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, plastic household articles exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total exports in 2022. Suriname (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Colombia (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. Paraguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Suriname (with a CAGR of +77.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic household articles supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Colombia ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports. Chile, Suriname and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

Suriname, with a CAGR of +55.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -12.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas purchases of household articles and toilet articles of plastics decreased by -2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic household articles imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the largest importer of household articles and toilet articles of plastics in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together creating a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Argentina (X tons) and Guyana (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.7% share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the household articles and toilet articles of plastics imports, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guyana (+14.5%), Peru (+8.7%), Colombia (+4.5%) and Brazil (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile and Guyana increased by +29 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic household articles importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports. Argentina, Peru, Venezuela and Guyana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 4.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Guyana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
