Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood barrel exports surged to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Chile prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X units), committing a 5.8% share of total exports. Guyana (X units), Brazil (X units) and Argentina (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood barrel exports from Chile stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Guyana (+38.4%), Brazil (+15.3%) and Colombia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guyana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guyana (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest wood barrel supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to +3.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+14.2% per year) and Colombia (-0.2% per year).

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, the amount of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood imported in MERCOSUR expanded rapidly to X units, picking up by 7.5% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
