Wood barrel exports soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 24% compared with 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood barrel exports surged to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Chile prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X units), committing a 5.8% share of total exports. Guyana (X units), Brazil (X units) and Argentina (X units) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood barrel exports from Chile stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Guyana (+38.4%), Brazil (+15.3%) and Colombia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guyana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guyana (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest wood barrel supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to +3.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+14.2% per year) and Colombia (-0.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Guyana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, the amount of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood imported in MERCOSUR expanded rapidly to X units, picking up by 7.5% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood barrel imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Chile (X units) represented the main importer of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood, constituting 60% of total imports. Argentina (X units) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (4.9%). Guyana (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood imports, with a CAGR of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. Argentina and Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Guyana (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile and Argentina increased by +14 and +4.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest wood barrel importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X), together accounting for 97% of total imports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +10.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
