The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The purchases of the three major importers of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood, namely Ireland, France and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Italy (X units), comprising a 6% share of total imports. Portugal (X units), Germany (X units) and Denmark (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood barrel importing markets in the European Union were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Ireland ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +13.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 11%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while Ireland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+16.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
