Exports in MENA
In 2021, coniferous roundwood exports in MENA dropped to X cubic meters, with a decrease of -13% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 116%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 90%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the major exporter of roundwood (coniferous) in MENA, with the volume of exports accounting for X cubic meters, which was near 65% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (9.6%) and Jordan (8.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous roundwood exports from Turkey stood at +27.6%. At the same time, Jordan (+39.5%), Egypt (+11.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Jordan increased by +33 and +6.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest coniferous roundwood supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Jordan ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.
Jordan, with a CAGR of +33.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per cubic meter), while Egypt ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of roundwood (coniferous), when their volume increased by 13% to X cubic meters. In general, imports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a precipitous setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of coniferous roundwood imports in 2021 were the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters), Algeria (X cubic meters) and Morocco (X cubic meters), together accounting for 81% of total import. Turkey (X cubic meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X cubic meters). All these countries together took near 14% share of total imports. Oman (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +62.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 74% of total imports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +54.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
