In value terms, tobacco making machinery production shrank markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 2,658%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X units of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco were exported in MENA; declining by -36.9% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 559%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, tobacco making machinery exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 249% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X units), creating a 13% share of total exports. Israel (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +30.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+70.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +70.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Turkey (+65 p.p.) and Israel (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest tobacco making machinery supplier in MENA, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
In Turkey, tobacco making machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +45.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+10.7% per year) and Israel (+63.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 249%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
Tobacco making machinery imports surged to X units in 2021, picking up by 71% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tobacco making machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Turkey was the largest importer of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 54% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X units) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (13%) and Morocco (4.9%). The following importers - Iraq (X units), Lebanon (X units) and Palestine (X units) - each finished at an 8.3% share of total imports.
Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Palestine (+49.0%), Iraq (+22.6%), Lebanon (+22.3%), Morocco (+12.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +49.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+48 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3.5 p.p.), Morocco (+2.7 p.p.), Palestine (+2.5 p.p.), Iraq (+2.3 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -49.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest tobacco making machinery importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Morocco, Lebanon and Palestine, which together accounted for a further 7.4%.
Among the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +71.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -21.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Palestine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iraq (+39.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
