Leek Market Size in MENA

In 2023, the MENA's leek market increased by X% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leek Production in MENA

In value terms, leek production fell modestly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2023, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of leek production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (X% per year) and Morocco (X% per year).

In 2023, the average leek yield in MENA contracted to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2022 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of the leek yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The leek harvested area stood at X ha in 2023, surging by X% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA

In 2023, exports of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by X% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports surged to $X in 2023. Overall, exports posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), achieving an X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables. At the same time, Oman (X%) and Morocco (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Egypt (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (X p.p.) and Oman (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Turkey (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Oman, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2022, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, supplies from abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables was finally on the rise to reach X tons after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports soared to $X in 2023. Overall, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Qatar was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Yemen (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total imports. The following importers - Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - each reached a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to leek imports into Qatar stood at X%. At the same time, Yemen (X%), Saudi Arabia (X%), Kuwait (X%), the United Arab Emirates (X%) and Bahrain (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Yemen emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Djibouti (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
