In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of household articles and toilet articles of plastics, when their volume decreased by -8% to X tons. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, plastic household articles exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 65% of total exports. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took near 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic household articles exports from Turkey stood at +11.7%. At the same time, Iran (+13.5%), Morocco (+13.5%) and Israel (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+26 p.p.) and Iran (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -5.3%, -5.5% and -16.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plastic household articles supplier in MENA, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +10.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+4.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 8.5%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the largest importers of household articles and toilet articles of plastics in MENA, together creating 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together achieving a 20% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Libya (X tons), Iran (X tons), Oman (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
