In 2021, shipments abroad of crispbread increased by 29% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 235% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 192%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the major exporter of crispbread, creating 55% of total exports. Israel (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (11%) and Turkey (5.4%). Yemen (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to crispbread exports from Egypt stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Israel (+46.7%), Yemen (+32.5%), Lebanon (+4.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkey (-3.3%) and Saudi Arabia (-26.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in MENA, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+60.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the main importers of crispbread in 2021, recording approx. 27% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Kuwait (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Israel (8.5%), Saudi Arabia (8.2%), Oman (7.1%) and Bahrain (6.6%).

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
