In 2021, the Malaysian pyrethrum and peppermint market increased by 3.9% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. Pyrethrum and peppermint consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Malaysia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of pyrethrum and peppermint decreased by -19.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Malaysia, with a combined 50% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +90.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Malaysia, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +33.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+79.6% per year) and Singapore (-8.0% per year).

The average pyrethrum and peppermint export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2021, purchases abroad of pyrethrum and peppermint was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, pyrethrum and peppermint imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), fivefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+27.8% per year) and India (+5.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pyrethrum and peppermint to Malaysia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+8.8% per year) and Indonesia (+10.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average pyrethrum and peppermint import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
