Chalk Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fourth year in a row, the Latin American chalk market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Chalk Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, chalk production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 53%. The level of production peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Chalk Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fourth year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in overseas shipments of chalks, which decreased by -0.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chalk exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru represented the major exporter of chalks in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (16%) and the Dominican Republic (4.5%). Brazil (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chalk exports from Peru stood at -6.1%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+72.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-5.3%), Colombia (-16.8%) and Argentina (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+25 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+4.5 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Argentina saw its share reduced by -9.5% and -17.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest chalk supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Peru amounted to -6.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-9.9% per year) and Colombia (-20.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chalk export price increased by +77.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 36%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chalk Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of chalks was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the largest importers of chalks in 2021, reaching near 28% and 27% of total imports, respectively. Peru (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Brazil (8.7%) and Argentina (7.2%). Paraguay (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +10.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
