Flax Fiber Market Size in Italy

In 2020, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Italian flax fiber market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

The average yield of flax fiber in Italy totaled X tonnes per ha in 2020, standing approx. at 2019. In general, the yield recorded a remarkable increase. In 2020, shipments abroad of flax fiber increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, flax fiber exports totaled $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure in 2020 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Lithuania (X tonnes) was the main destination for flax fiber exports from Italy, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, flax fiber exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tunisia (X tonnes), more than tenfold. The U.S. (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-X% per year) and the U.S. (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for flax fiber exported from Italy were the U.S. ($X), Lithuania ($X) and China ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Turkey and Tunisia, which together accounted for a further X Kong SAR (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average flax fiber export price amounted to $X per tonne, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2020, supplies from abroad of flax fiber increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber imports totaled $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, Romania (X tonnes) constituted the largest flax fiber supplier to Italy, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, flax fiber imports from Romania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tonnes), twofold. Belgium (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Romania stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (-X% per year) and Belgium (-X% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the largest flax fiber suppliers to Italy, together accounting for X% of total imports.
