In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco decreased by -12.6% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 339% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then reduced in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Germany (X units), followed by Belgium (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Poland (X units), Switzerland (X units), the Netherlands (X units), France (X units), Ukraine (X units), Russia (X units) and Spain (X units) represented the main importers of machinery for the preparation or making up of tobacco, together creating 77% of total imports. Italy (X units), Greece (X units) and Hungary (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 35% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belgium, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 42%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +262.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 77%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Switzerland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+231.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
