In 2022, the Europe fresh pork carcase market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together comprising 69% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat, when their volume decreased by -3.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 5.9%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belgium represented the major exporter of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 37% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the UK (X tons), together creating a 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total exports.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat. At the same time, Russia (+9.4%), the UK (+5.0%) and Denmark (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.7%), the Netherlands (-5.1%) and Poland (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+5.1 p.p.), Russia (+3.5 p.p.) and the UK (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Poland, Germany and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -3.1% and -4.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in Europe, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-3.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat were imported in Europe; reducing by -7.1% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 3.2%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together making up a 44% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+13.6%), Slovakia (+9.7%), Romania (+9.2%), Spain (+5.3%) and Poland (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.0%), Lithuania (-2.5%), Greece (-4.0%) and Austria (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+4.5 p.p.), Romania (+3.1 p.p.), Poland (+2.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Greece (-2.3 p.p.) and Germany (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest fresh pork carcase importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports. Greece, Romania, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Lithuania and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +9.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment.
