Exports from Serbia

In 2022, exports of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat from Serbia declined remarkably to X tons, reducing by -74.4% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 170%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 147%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

North Macedonia (X tons) was the main destination for fresh pork carcase exports from Serbia, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh pork carcase exports to North Macedonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Albania (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to North Macedonia amounted to +15.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Albania (0.0% per year) and Montenegro (-23.3% per year).

In value terms, North Macedonia ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat exports from Serbia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Montenegro ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to North Macedonia stood at +15.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Montenegro (-22.0% per year) and Albania (0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average fresh pork carcase export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Serbia

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat decreased by -39.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 257%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

France (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh pork carcase imports to Serbia, together comprising 90% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +203.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest fresh pork carcase suppliers to Serbia were Croatia ($X), Hungary ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 90% of total imports.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +169.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+22.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
