In 2021, shipments abroad of chalks was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France was the largest exporter of chalks in Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total exports. Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from France decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+28.2%) and the UK (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-2.2%), Belgium (-3.5%), Germany (-6.8%) and Greece (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+7.3 p.p.), the UK (+7.2 p.p.), Poland (+4.9 p.p.), Belgium (+2.6 p.p.) and Spain (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest chalk supplier in Europe, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in France amounted to -3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-6.9% per year) and Belgium (-1.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 10%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of chalks increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the key importers of chalks in 2021, accounting for approx. 27% and 20% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and France (X tons), together mixing up a 32% share of total imports. Finland (X tons), Russia (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ireland (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ireland and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +3.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
