From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sodium nitrate imports into the Netherlands stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+22.4%), Denmark (+21.6%), Austria (+5.2%), Poland (+1.5%) and France (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Estonia (-4.3%), Germany (-6.5%), Sweden (-8.6%), Romania (-8.8%), Italy (-9.7%), Belgium (-12.6%) and Spain (-29.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands, Poland, France, Denmark, Austria, Germany and Bulgaria increased by +21, +6.7, +6.1, +4.1, +3.5, +2.5 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 36% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Bulgaria and Romania, which together accounted for a further 56%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 51% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
