As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, knitted fabric exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the largest exporter of knitted or crocheted fabrics in the European Union, making up 43% of total export. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.4% share, followed by Portugal (6%), the Czech Republic (5.5%), Poland (5.2%), the Netherlands (5%), Greece (4.7%) and Belgium (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 54% of total exports. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

These countries were followed by France, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Spain, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Austria and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 47%.

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +11.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage.
