The Netherlands (X tons) remains the largest bambara bean producing country in the European Union, accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, bambara bean production in the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bulgaria (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Luxembourg (X tons), with an 11% share.

In the Netherlands, bambara bean production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bulgaria (-0.6% per year) and Luxembourg (+1.8% per year).

Exports in the EU

Bambara bean exports soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 16% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bambara bean exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) represented the main exporter of bambara beans, creating 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together comprising a 39% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Italy was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bambara beans exports, with a CAGR of +83.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+25.0%), Greece (+16.9%), Spain (+10.2%) and Slovakia (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Netherlands (-27.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Italy ($X), Greece ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +71.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, bambara bean export price increased by +46.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. Based on 2021 figures, bambara bean import price increased by +32.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
