Dolomite Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS dolomite market fell to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a slight expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of dolomite increased by 135% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after five years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 249%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dolomite exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 135%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the key exporter of dolomite in ECOWAS, mixing up 100% of total export.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dolomite exports, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Burkina Faso increased by +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) also remains the largest dolomite supplier in ECOWAS.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of dolomite, when their volume decreased by -32.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 287%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, dolomite imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 210%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2021. Mali (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dolomite imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Nigeria (+22.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mali (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+53 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-44 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dolomite in ECOWAS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +7.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+17.6% per year) and Mali (-13.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
