Gambia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving a 7.5% share of total exports.

Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Gambia (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Gambia ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports.

In Gambia, construction sands exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 158% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cabo Verde prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each recorded a 6.5% share of total imports.

Imports into Cabo Verde decreased at an average annual rate of -9.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+6.2%) and Senegal (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-6.0%) and Ghana (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cabo Verde (-3.6 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest construction sands importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +10.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, construction sands import price increased by +87.9% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cabo Verde ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
