Beer Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS beer market rose to $X in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, beer exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Togo was the main exporting country with an export of around X litres, which reached X% of total exports. Nigeria (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Benin (X litres). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports.

Exports from Togo increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Togo (X p.p.) and Benin (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In Togo, beer exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (X% per year) and Benin (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per litre, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas purchases of beer decreased by X% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, beer imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of beer, namely Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana and Mali, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Benin (X litres), comprising a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest beer importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Guinea-Bissau ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

Guinea, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of X% against the previous year.
