In value terms, lithium battery production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 1,474%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

After six years of growth, shipments abroad of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -16% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, lithium battery exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland was the largest exporter of lithium cells ans batteries in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Romania (12%). The following exporters - Russia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery exports from Poland stood at +29.5%. At the same time, Romania (+87.3%), Russia (+30.6%) and the Czech Republic (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +87.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+36 p.p.), Romania (+12 p.p.) and Russia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-9.1 p.p.) and Hungary (-38.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest lithium battery supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland amounted to +26.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+20.6% per year) and Romania (+74.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 91%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Lithium Battery Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -1.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 78%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, lithium battery imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the key importer of lithium cells ans batteries in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Russia (12%), Romania (11%), Hungary (7.8%) and Slovakia (5.4%). The following importers - Ukraine (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery imports into Poland stood at +24.4%. At the same time, Lithuania (+25.4%), Romania (+22.1%), Ukraine (+21.5%), Slovakia (+16.3%), the Czech Republic (+14.9%), Russia (+12.6%) and Hungary (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland and Romania increased by +16 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 65% of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +33.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
