The East European ethylene market shrank to $X in 2021, declining by -5.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of ethylene exported in Eastern Europe surged to X tons, increasing by 40% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 326% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 319% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Czech Republic represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 82% of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Hungary (7.2%).

Exports from the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -2.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+48.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +48.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ukraine (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hungary (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ukraine and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -5.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest ethylene supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Czech Republic totaled -5.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-8.2% per year) and Hungary (+36.6% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 146% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Romania (X tons) was the main importer of ethylene, committing 72% of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near 24% share of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ethylene imports into Romania stood at -4.5%. The Czech Republic (-4.4%), Slovakia (-8.9%) and Ukraine (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ethylene in Eastern Europe, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.9% share.

In Romania, ethylene imports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (-9.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (-5.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
