Fibreboard Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, the East Asian fibreboard market increased by 0.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Fibreboard Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, fibreboard production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of fibreboard, when their volume increased by 47% to X cubic meters. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fibreboard exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X cubic meters) represented the major exporter of fibreboard in Eastern Asia, generating 99% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fibreboard exports, with a CAGR of -2.3% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +2.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest fibreboard supplier in Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at -3.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to -1.1% per year.

Fibreboard Imports

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of fibreboard decreased by -0.7% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fibreboard imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Japan (X cubic meters) was the major importer of fibreboard, achieving 49% of total imports. China (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by South Korea (X cubic meters) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fibreboard imports into Japan stood at -1.2%. At the same time, South Korea (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Korea increased by +11 percentage points.

In value terms, the largest fibreboard importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while South Korea ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
