Sugar Market Size in the Czech Republic

In 2021, the Czech sugar market decreased by -20.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Austria (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of sugar exports from the Czech Republic, together accounting for 66% of total exports. Germany, Romania, Poland and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Slovenia (with a CAGR of +111.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Hungary ($X) and Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest markets for sugar exported from the Czech Republic worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Poland, Romania and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +99.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) and Slovenia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (-3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Sugar Imports

Imports into the Czech Republic

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of sugar, when their volume decreased by -20.7% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugar imports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 12%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugar imports to the Czech Republic, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Slovakia, Argentina and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Argentina (with a CAGR of +145.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest sugar suppliers to the Czech Republic, together comprising 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Slovakia, Argentina and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Among the main suppliers, Argentina, with a CAGR of +112.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sugar import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
