In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for fresh whole chicken exports from Croatia, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh whole chicken exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia totaled +35.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (-1.5% per year) and Montenegro (-5.5% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled whole chickens exports from Croatia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by North Macedonia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia amounted to +35.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (-2.4% per year) and Montenegro (-5.9% per year).

The average fresh whole chicken export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In general, imports, however, showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 181%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 197% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Slovenia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fresh whole chicken to Croatia, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh whole chicken imports from Slovenia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Slovenia totaled +28.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+51.0% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-23.9% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fresh or chilled whole chickens to Croatia, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Slovenia amounted to +36.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+40.7% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-25.8% per year).

In 2021, the average fresh whole chicken import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fresh whole chicken import price increased by +109.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 42%.
