Fresh Whole Chicken Exports

Exports in Asia

In 2021, fresh whole chicken exports in Asia was estimated at X tons, growing by 5% on the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -16.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +68.6% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. China was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 77% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (5.7%). Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+60.4%), Saudi Arabia (+11.8%) and Oman (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+6.2 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.9 p.p.) and Oman (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest fresh whole chicken supplier in Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +6.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+12.8% per year) and Oman (+4.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.0% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +121.8% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the key importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens, mixing up 66% of total imports. Macao SAR (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Bahrain (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Kuwait (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) - together made up 7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh whole chicken imports into Hong Kong SAR stood at +8.0%. At the same time, Kuwait (+58.5%), Bahrain (+17.9%), Macao SAR (+17.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +58.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Yemen (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+16 p.p.), Macao SAR (+6.4 p.p.), Bahrain (+4.8 p.p.) and Kuwait (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates and Yemen saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
