After two years of decline, the CIS nitrogenous fertilizer market increased by 5.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 9.2%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS
In 2022, nitrogenous fertilizer exports in the CIS shrank to X tons, which is down by -6.7% on the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 90%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the main exporter of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical), making up 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nitrogenous fertilizer exports from Russia stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Belarus (+5.1%) and Kazakhstan (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.1% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Uzbekistan (+2.8 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest nitrogenous fertilizer supplier in the CIS, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+3.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+12.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -19.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, overseas purchases of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) decreased by -5.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the main importer of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical), comprising 34% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Belarus (16%), Moldova (16%), Armenia (6.4%) and Tajikistan (6.3%). Russia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (+17.3%), Moldova (+11.8%), Belarus (+7.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+4.1%), Armenia (+3.1%) and Russia (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2022. Moldova (+7.7 p.p.), Tajikistan (+4.3 p.p.) and Belarus (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -6.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Moldova ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 62% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Tajikistan and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +18.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
