After two years of decline, the CIS fresh chicken cut market increased by 4.5% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia totaled +2.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Uzbekistan (+5.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+6.0% per year).

Exports in CIS

In 2021, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken decreased by -7.2% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Belarus dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled cuts of chicken exports, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus (+21 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -19.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

In 2021, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken decreased by -17.1% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 104%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Russia dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. Moldova (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +37.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Moldova (+155.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +155.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+42 p.p.) and Moldova (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -21.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
