The CIS crispbread market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. After six years of growth, shipments abroad of crispbread decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 126%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, crispbread exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 17% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+41.1%) and Moldova (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +41.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+7.5 p.p.) and Russia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Moldova (-9.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in the CIS, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Russia, crispbread exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+39.2% per year) and Moldova (+4.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, crispbread imports contracted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major importer of crispbread in the CIS, making up 86% of total import. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), constituting a 7.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Moldova (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each recorded a 3.9% share of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
