In 2021, the Central Asian fresh whole chicken market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, fresh whole chicken exports in Central Asia surged to X tons, increasing by 53% on 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 1,911% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -23.8% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the main importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens in Central Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Tajikistan (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (14%) and Kyrgyzstan (13%).

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fresh or chilled whole chickens. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +48.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tajikistan (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest fresh whole chicken importing markets in Central Asia were Tajikistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), together accounting for 91% of total imports. Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 9.5%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +28.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
