The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the largest exporter of tomatoes, making up X% of total exports. Afghanistan (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (X%) and Malaysia (X%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato exports from China stood at X%. At the same time, Afghanistan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (X%) and India (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Afghanistan (X p.p.) and China (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (X p.p.) and India (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of tomatoes, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, tomato imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) was the major importer of tomatoes, constituting X% of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X%) and Singapore (X%). Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato imports into Pakistan stood at X%. At the same time, Bangladesh (X%), Afghanistan (X%) and Hong Kong SAR (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
