Tomato Exports

Exports from Sri Lanka

For the fourth year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded decline in shipments abroad of tomatoes, which decreased by X% to X kg in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Maldives (X kg) was the main destination for tomato exports from Sri Lanka, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Maldives exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Maldives totaled X%.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from Sri Lanka, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Tomato Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of tomatoes increased by X% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Sri Lanka, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. Mauritania (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (X% per year) and Mauritania (X% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Sri Lanka, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritania (X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tomato import price decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year.
