Production By Country in Asia-Pacific
India (X tonnes) remains the largest sugar producing country in Asia-Pacific, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, sugar production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by China (X tonnes), with a X% share.
In India, sugar production remained relatively stable over the period from 2007-2020. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+X% per year) and China (-X% per year).
Sugar Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2020, the amount of sugar exported in Asia-Pacific shrank markedly to X tonnes, which is down by -X% on the previous year. In general, exports saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2019 to 2020, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar exports reduced notably to $X in 2020. Overall, exports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the largest exporter of sugar in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports recording X tonnes, which was near X% of total exports in 2020. It was distantly followed by India (X tonnes), constituting a X% share of total exports. Fiji (X tonnes), the Philippines (X tonnes) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Lao People's Democratic Republic (+X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sugar supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Thailand ($X), India ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the sugar export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the export price increased by X% year-to-year. The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per tonne), while Thailand ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Sugar Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of sugar increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar imports surged to $X in 2020. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2020, Indonesia (X tonnes) and China (X tonnes) were the main importers of sugar in Asia-Pacific, together recording near X% of total imports. Malaysia (X tonnes) occupied a X% share (based on tonnes) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by India (X%), South Korea (X%) and Japan (X%). Vietnam (X tonnes) took a little share of total imports.

In 2020, the sugar import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per tonne, rising by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when the import price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
