View PricingDietary Guidelines for Sugar Intake in Grams
The dietary guidelines for sugar intake recommend limiting the consumption of added sugars to a certain amount of grams per day. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that provides energy but has no nutritional value. Consuming excessive amounts of added sugars can lead to various health problems, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental cavities.
Recommended Sugar Intake
The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests that women should aim for no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) of added sugars per day, while men should limit their intake to no more than 36 grams (9 teaspoons) per day. These guidelines apply to both adults and children above the age of two.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also provides guidelines on sugar intake. They recommend that adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. For an average adult with a normal body mass index (BMI), this translates to about 50 grams (12 teaspoons) of sugar per day. However, the WHO suggests that further reducing the intake to less than 5% of total energy intake provides additional health benefits.
Differences Between Naturally Occurring and Added Sugars
It is important to note that the dietary guidelines for sugar intake primarily focus on added sugars and not naturally occurring sugars found in fruits, vegetables, and milk. Naturally occurring sugars come packaged with other nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which makes them a healthier choice.
Added sugars, on the other hand, are sugars and syrups that are added to foods during processing or preparation. These include sugars added to baked goods, desserts, sugary drinks, and processed snacks. Added sugars provide empty calories and can contribute to weight gain and numerous health problems.
Reading Food Labels
Reading food labels is crucial for understanding the amount of added sugars in packaged foods. Unfortunately, added sugars can go by several different names on labels, including sucrose, glucose, fructose, corn syrup, and high-fructose corn syrup. Learning to identify these different names can help consumers make more informed choices about the sugar content of their food and beverages.
Health Implications of Excessive Sugar Intake
Consuming excessive amounts of added sugars has been linked to numerous negative health effects, including:
- Weight Gain: High sugar intake can lead to weight gain and even obesity. Sugary foods and beverages are often high in calories and low in nutritional value, leading to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure.
- Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Regularly consuming too much added sugar is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
- Dental Cavities: Excessive sugar consumption, especially in the form of sugary drinks and snacks, can contribute to tooth decay and the formation of cavities.
- Poor Nutritional Intake: Foods high in added sugars often displace more nutritious options in the diet, leading to inadequate intake of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.
By following the dietary guidelines for sugar intake and limiting the consumption of added sugars, individuals can improve their overall health and reduce the risk of various health problems.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
