Splenda to Sugar

Splenda and sugar are both popular sweeteners used in a wide range of food and beverages. While they both serve the purpose of adding sweetness, there are several differences between them in terms of their composition, taste, and health effects.

Splenda, also known as sucralose, is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. It is made by replacing three hydrogen-oxygen groups on sugar molecules with chlorine atoms, which makes it about 600 times sweeter than sugar. Due to its intense sweetness, only a small amount of Splenda is needed to achieve the same level of sweetness as sugar.

On the other hand, sugar is a naturally occurring carbohydrate that is commonly extracted from sugar cane or sugar beets. It consists of glucose and fructose molecules, and provides 4 calories per gram. Sugar is widely used in the food industry and is a common ingredient in many recipes.

In terms of taste, Splenda is often described as having a clean and sweet flavor that is similar to sugar, but without the same level of mouthfeel. Sugar, on the other hand, provides a characteristic sweetness accompanied by a slightly caramel-like flavor. Some people prefer the taste of sugar due to its familiar flavor and texture.

From a health perspective, Splenda is considered safe for consumption by regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
