In 2022, overseas shipments of vegetables (temporarily preserved) decreased by -28.3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 53%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the major exporter of vegetables (temporarily preserved) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Malaysia (10%) and Indonesia (6.4%). Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. Indonesia and Lao People's Democratic Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Malaysia (-7.1%) and Thailand (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam and Indonesia increased by +13 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest temporarily preserved vegetable supplier in ASEAN, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

For the fourth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in purchases abroad of vegetables (temporarily preserved), which decreased by -7.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports faced a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 39% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Brunei Darussalam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 60% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 77% of total imports. Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Brunei Darussalam, with a CAGR of +30.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
