Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Overall, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brunei Darussalam represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together making up a 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each recorded a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hot-rolled high speed steel bar imports into Brunei Darussalam stood at +8.6%. At the same time, Thailand (+24.2%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+23.6%) and the Philippines (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-16.1%), Singapore (-17.9%) and Malaysia (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brunei Darussalam (+42 p.p.), Thailand (+11 p.p.), the Philippines (+5.7 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-12.1 p.p.), Malaysia (-12.3 p.p.) and Singapore (-35.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Brunei Darussalam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +24.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -27.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 311%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
