Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, shipments abroad of ghee was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ghee exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) represented the main exporter of ghee, committing X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together achieving an X% share of total exports. The Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (X%) and the Philippines (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (X%) and Singapore (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (X p.p.), Vietnam (X p.p.) and the Philippines (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest ghee supplier in ASEAN, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a X% share.

In Malaysia, ghee exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (X% per year) and Indonesia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

Ghee imports shrank to X tons in 2022, waning by X% compared with the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ghee imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of ghee, namely the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Vietnam (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Singapore (X%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
