The ASEAN crispbread market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas shipments of crispbread increased by 6.1% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), creating a 7.6% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in ASEAN, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

In Thailand, crispbread exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+16.5% per year) and Indonesia (-0.8% per year).

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Singapore ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 29%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
