Exports from Angola
In 2022, overseas shipments of solid biofuels decreased by -13.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 804% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, solid biofuel exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 676% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for solid biofuel exports from Angola, with a 20% share of total exports. Moreover, solid biofuel exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lebanon (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Portugal totaled +62.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (+18.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+34.7% per year).
In value terms, Portugal ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for solid biofuels exports from Angola, comprising 20% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Portugal amounted to +62.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (+8.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+41.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average solid biofuel export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 38%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+26.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Solid Biofuel Imports
Imports into Angola
In 2022, the amount of solid biofuels imported into Angola soared to X tons, rising by 98% against the year before. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 428% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, solid biofuel imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 201% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Portugal (X tons), China (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of solid biofuel imports to Angola, together accounting for 41% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lebanon, the United States, India and South Africa, which together accounted for a further 4.9%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +76.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest solid biofuel suppliers to Angola were Portugal ($X), China ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 28% share of total imports. South Africa, Lebanon, the United States and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.7%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +32.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average solid biofuel import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
