The African tea market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Tea Production in Africa
In value terms, tea production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Kenya (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tea production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, tea production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malawi (X tons), ninefold. Tanzania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Kenya stood at X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malawi (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).
Tea Exports
Exports in Africa
For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of tea, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, tea exports amounted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kenya dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), creating a X% share of total exports. Rwanda (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tea exports from Kenya stood at X%. At the same time, Rwanda (X%), Uganda (X%), Tanzania (X%) and Malawi (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Kenya (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malawi saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the largest tea supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kenya totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Tea Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of tea were imported in Africa; jumping by X% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tea imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2022. Ghana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Sudan (X%) and South Africa (X%). Algeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cameroon (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tea importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. Algeria, Libya, Sudan, South Africa, Mauritania, Senegal, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Among the main importing countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
