Semiconductor Device Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African semiconductor device market decreased by -1.6% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Semiconductor Device Production in Africa

In value terms, semiconductor device production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X units of semiconductor devices were exported in Africa; growing by 28% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), achieving an 8.5% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor device exports from South Africa stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+137.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +137.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Burkina Faso increased by +53 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Morocco, semiconductor device exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-2.9% per year) and Burkina Faso (+107.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2021, declining by -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per thousand units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per thousand units), while South Africa ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of semiconductor devices imported in Africa skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 528% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mauritania (X units) represented the major importer of semiconductor devices, committing 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), comprising a 17% share of total imports. Ethiopia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units) and Algeria (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Mauritania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices imports, with a CAGR of +111.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+38.9%), Nigeria (+26.7%), Mozambique (+20.1%), Algeria (+15.8%) and Namibia (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Mauritania (+65 p.p.), Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor devices in Africa, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +22.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+1.9% per year) and Ethiopia (+6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per thousand units, dropping by -75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a dramatic contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per thousand units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per thousand units), while Mauritania ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
