Lithium Battery Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African lithium battery market increased by 2.3% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +70.2% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium battery production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -21.2% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of lithium cells ans batteries exported in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 32% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium battery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 65% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Rwanda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lithium cells ans batteries exports, with a CAGR of +296.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+43.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+65 p.p.) and South Africa (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-8 p.p.) and Tunisia (-59.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lithium battery supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +20.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+11.4% per year) and Tunisia (-5.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -11.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Lithium battery imports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 10% on the previous year. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +103.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium battery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together constituting a 20% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery imports into Nigeria stood at +30.8%. At the same time, Rwanda (+58.6%), Gambia (+57.5%), Morocco (+35.7%), Tunisia (+19.8%), South Africa (+19.5%), Zambia (+19.2%), Botswana (+18.8%), Zimbabwe (+14.3%), Egypt (+9.6%) and Tanzania (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Algeria (-1.9%) and Angola (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco, South Africa, Gambia, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe increased by +27, +5, +4.7, +4.2, +4.1, +3.2, +2.5, +1.6 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest lithium battery importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Angola, Gambia, Zambia, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +66.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
