The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest exporters of fresh or chilled fish fillets in 2023, reaching approx. X% and X% of total exports, respectively. Kenya (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (X%), South Africa (X%) and Senegal (X%). Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together comprising X% of total exports. Senegal, Namibia, South Africa and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2022 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of fresh or chilled fish fillets, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh fish fillet imports rose rapidly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of fresh or chilled fish fillets, namely Tanzania, Mauritius and South Africa, represented more than third of total import. Nigeria (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Benin (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Lesotho (X%) and Mozambique (X%). Burundi (X tons), Togo (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, fresh fish fillet import price increased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.
